Transparent Slovakia Fund

The Fund for Transparent Slovakia was established on the initiative of seven member companies in 2012. Its main objective is to improve transparency and promote a healthy business environment by supporting watchdog and analytical organizations which control the activities of public institutions and public financial management.

Respecting the rule of law and ensuring a fair and predictable environment is absolutely essential to the functioning of a modern and prosperous society. As recent history clearly shows, non-profit organisations play an indispensable role in this process, forming a very important independent control mechanism, especially in the event of a systemic failure of state control institutions and mechanisms.

Currently, the fund has 14 members. During this period, we were able to raise and regrant more than one million EUR, that were used to support NGOs with significant influence in this area. The work of these NGOs helped save hundreds of millions of EUR in public procurements and many representatives of these NGOs transferred to work for the government and have significant influence on how Slovakia works with European Funds and other public resources.

In addition, the Fund has also supported regional organisations in the fight against corruption and has been training young journalists for the last three years in the Academy of Investigative Journalism. The Academy includes grant support for investigative projects.

Grant calls were in 2023 launched under the umbrella of the Impact Lab programme and will be so in the upcoming years. The programme develops the skills of civil society organisations thanks to the support from the European Union. In addition to the multiplied financial support, organisations will also have to develop their organisational and staff capacities so that they form a solid part of our society. In the Impact Lab, the Fund for a Transparent Slovakia supports projects in the area of strengthening democracy and its institutions.

The Fund’s Objectives

  • The promotion of systemic change that will help to eliminate corruption and “the kidnapping of the state” (courts, prosecution, police, inspection bodies…)
  • Public scrutiny and pressure on all participants to comply with the laws and ethical standards

The Fund’s Strategy

  • Financial and non-financial support of organizations and initiatives which help to fulfil the above mentioned goals
  • Networking of participants, creating synergies and a critical mass of operators who refuse corruption

In Websupport, we want to contribute to the systematic improvement of the business environment in Slovakia. Organisations supported by the fund do an incredibly good job of uncovering and pointing out the problems we have here today. By doing that, they help our society advance. Transparency should be part of every mature, democratic society and we want to help co-create it here in Slovakia.
